News « Pubs Could Cut Energy Costs by 20 Percent

According to the Carbon Trust, pubs can save up to 20 percent on their energy costs in the long term by investing around £2000 in measures including draught proofing, insulation, energy saving lighting and installing a smart meter.

That’s just one of the claimed findings by the organisation, which has set up a free independent advice service to help businesses improve energy efficiency. The service offers not only advice but also a recommended list of accredited suppliers to undertake any work deemed necessary to help a particular business make any required money saving changes.

‘A lot of pubs think there is a single bullet to save costs — it is easy to reduce staff at the end of the day but takes time to save on energy in the eyes of many licensees’, the Carbon Trust’s Dominic Burbridge commented.

‘Our specialists and suppliers have the knowledge which can help remove that headache.’

A particular area identified as in need of attention was food operations, which in some pubs can account for as much as 40 percent of total energy costs. Pub operators are being encouraged to educate chefs in the importance of efficiency and saving energy.
